Letter from the Editor: “AI Isn’t the Hero. You Are.”

Published on May 4, 2025

A glowing neon rabbit with a geometric design, symbolizing the fusion of AI and humanity—representing everyday heroes shaping a bold, tech-driven future.

If you’ve ever been told “AI is coming for your job!” or caught in a late-night doom scroll about sentient robots taking over the world, I’ve got good news: it’s time to exhale.

Let’s set the record straight: AI is a tool. It is not a takeover. It is not a mind; it’s not magic, and it certainly is not your replacement. It is a series of programmable code. It is not sentient.

In this month’s issue, we explore a truth that’s as grounding as it is empowering: AI is at its best when it stays in its lane, supporting human intelligence, not trying to outshine it.

Clay Lehman reminds us of this balance beautifully in his piece Hiring Smarter, where AI isn’t about stripping away intuition but sharpening it. As he puts it, “AI isn’t replacing human intuition—it’s enhancing it.” From job descriptions to candidate screening, it’s about clarity, not cold automation.

Brad Ball doubles down on the dance between creativity and code in Beyond the Algorithm: The Creative Power of AI + Human Insight. The challenge? Letting AI support our imagination without stifling it. Because, as he argues, the irreplaceable parts of being human (intuition, ingenuity, artistry) still lead the charge.

And when it comes to the next generation, Warren Schuitema offers perspective in AI, Kids & Screens: AI won’t raise our kids for us, but it can support learning when used intentionally. But we need to continue to give our kids plenty of room for real-life mud pies and eye contact. The expert verdict? Parents still set the tone.

Will Stewart perhaps sums it up best: AI doesn’t replace people. It replaces disorganized processes.” Mic drop.

This brings us to one of our feature stories this month: Story Wins First; AI Wins Fast by Eve Whitaker. If you’re a brand builder, business owner, or creative feeling overwhelmed by AI’s content-churning pace, this one’s for you. With heart and experience, Eve shows us how to blend timeless storytelling with AI tools to create messaging that moves people, not just markets. Her personal reflections of VHS rewinds of The Last of the Mohicans to the ecological ripple effects of wolves in Yellowstone are poignant reminders that stories change hearts, and AI can help scale that magic. Not replace it.

In Eve’s words: “AI doesn’t replace the spark. It helps fan the flame.”

So this May, let’s not fear the tool. Let’s wield it — thoughtfully, creatively, and with the kind of human discernment no algorithm can replicate.

Be curious. Stay empowered. Use your humanity.

Warmly,
Beth A. Mast
