Decommodifying Our Children: Raising Kids Instead of Test Scores

A Kitchen Table Revolution

We live in an age where problems get swept under rugs, and those rugs actively resist being cleaned — much less lifted to expose what’s hidden. While the status quo may go on or crash in an instant, if you have any interest in education or the “human resources” that will surround you in the future then you will agree that today’s kids must be trained differently.

Savvy and flexibility will trump rote facts. While the three R’s and other communication and interpretive skills will always be worth the drill, even the foundations of the STEM disciplines can be shotgunned when necessary at a later date when relevant.

But the ability to exploit patterns, creatively and rapidly assimilate new tools or adapt to the rapidly changing workplace? Experience working on sustained projects instead of repetitive worksheets?

The digital literacy revolution isn’t happening in classrooms. It’s happening in homes and after school, where curiosity, context, and concern meet AI tools.

I know I sometimes get heated about school, but I promise you this isn’t another of my screeds against The Man. It’s a genuine plea to reimagine education based on the desired outcomes.

Most people think school happens in a school building. What if real learning starts right where real life happens? What if we don’t need to separate and partition our realities any more?

The Myth of One Size Fits All

Schools operate like factories, treating children as uniform widgets with an expectation of sameness. The sad reality is that the “Common School” movement is fast approaching 200 years old, and like the one-room schoolhouse before it we’re overdue for a new system.

I’m not just talking curricula. We rolled out “Common Core” to predictably mediocre results just a few years ago, after all. No amount of software updates will turn a tank into an airplane; the very form does not give us the results we want any more.

For example, the one-size-fits-all approach was exposed as disastrous for student outcomes seven decades ago. The “flaw of averages” concept was famously recognized during World War II and studied through the 1950’s, like when the Air Force did its due diligence research in designing a new cockpit for its planes … and realized very pointedly that there was no “average” pilot size. Ultimately, flexibility for the skilled human resources was more important than efficiency of a single core design. The USAF pragmatically adopted a simple adjustable seat instead of shrinking the cockpit to a standard size.

Schools need to take note: Students and their parents need to be able to adjust — actively! — and focus on their unique strengths and specialize, not generalize. The focus on standardization from grade level and core competencies to standardized tests and “socialization” used to serve us well, but with the explosion of technology this has become a drawback.

School is about compliance; home learning with AI is about creation. At home, kids can explore and receive tips and tricks from experts all over the world in whatever field they’re interested in. From instruments to proto-engineering puzzle games, kids grow up aware of the information streams behind the screens …

And they want to be freed to explore. Not just the world wide web itself, but their very selves. Their own strengths in their own comfortable rhythms.

AI closes the resourcing gap — not by replacing teachers, but by allowing them to focus on providing guidance and direction instead of raw material and lesson plans. AI tools are turning bows into guns here, and our institutions are fighting this march of progress based on tradition.

Decades ago, I had friends over to my home all summer to create and program LEGO robots. Now, whether in apps or more robust and user-friendly educational programs and games, the ability to build, simulate and even monetize has expanded beyond my wildest imaginings and way beyond the cardboard walls of a textbook.

AI as the Family Tutor and Co‑Learner

AI cannot and will not ever replace adults in the raising of children — but it can augment them:

  • Research partner
  • Writing coach
  • Debate opponent
  • Lab assistant
  • Brainstorming engine
  • Portfolio advisor

The list can go on for about as long as you can come up with a child’s imagination. A child asks “Why?” and the AI doesn’t stop until there’s a satisfying discovery.

This broad exposure is real mentorship and the opportunity for true, uninterrupted, no-performance-playacting learning. The kitchen table becomes a living classroom. AI becomes a persistent curiosity coach, and parents just like teachers can become guides and witnesses of growth.

From Projects to Portfolios

Adding the proven academic successes of the homeschooling and unschooling philosophies to AI tools can allow us to shift to Portfolio‑Driven Learning. Instead of tests and grades, students build real artifacts that can prep and even follow them into their careers:

  • Podcasts
  • Essays & Presentations
  • Interactive websites
  • Mini‑apps and game coding
  • Civic engagement
  • Documentaries
  • Graphic design and art-in-the-wild

When I taught in a High School, I had a concerned parent invite me over to her home to advise her on how to direct her son. She was concerned that he wasn’t interested in college, opting to play video games “all day” in his room. Raise your hand if you’ve heard (or had) similar fears.

After a short bit of socializing, I was able to not just tell her all was well, but to advise her in how to support her son’s growth: He wasn’t just playing the game. The LEGO moved on his desk each day. He was creating and selling cosmetic packs for the game’s characters in the in-game store.

He had two feet in the shallow end of a professional 3D modeling career, and she wasn’t even aware of it. Anybody want to argue whether four years of applied work on a passionate hobby in a field, with a little supportive direction, would compare to a four-year degree with only standard projects in a thin portfolio?

Mastery matters more to employers than a credential. Process is vital for learning, not just product. Learners see their progress concretely when they’re working in the clay instead of reading from a book or listening to a lecture. Tests grade memory. Portfolios grade meaning.

And the tone of their questions and discussion changes, too. Nothing motivates a learner more than sharing something real with a real audience. When a kid starts cooking for himself, he will critique his mom less.

The Social Ecosystem of Learning

Homeschoolers aren’t isolated just because they learn at home — they join networks. Is sitting in a desk being told not to talk really better than a stable environment with sharper, more focused bursts of human interaction at co-op events and outings?

Online cohorts. Local micro‑hubs and hobbyist groups. Cross‑state collaborations and organizations like 4-H and science centers. All of these have actively adapted to the new technology in ways schools have not.

Education happens slower in isolation, but it’s no longer the individual who is the isolated one unless by choice. AI can connect learners globally with cutting-edge ideas from people they stand no chance of meeting while also locating mentors and peers that are accessible.

It just takes guidance and a new strategy for education.

Pitfalls, Boundaries & Guardrails

I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the downsides. Learning how to ask a robot questions is very different from a teacher, and AIs can straight-up hallucinate false data too. We can’t assume a pure purpose in the children, either, as forbidden fruit and a lack of a clear boundary are both equally tempting. Parents and mentors still need to guide values, safety, and critical thinking.

Some basic tips for responsible use:

  • Ask why before what
  • Always check multiple sources
  • Reflect on the ethics of an interest or creative work
  • Mentors must review final outputs, and ideally need to approve a project before it starts too
  • Use AI to speed up the compilation of facts, not replace thinking

The new role of the “educator” is not a babysitter of tech but rather an interpretation coach. Let your energy go into aiming the gun instead of pulling back the bowstring.

The Stakes are Vast

Future careers won’t center around rote tasks. They’re about problem‑finding, sense‑making, and creativity: The very things AI amplifies when in the hands of a skilled user.

Imagine a generation who:

  • Own their own education
  • Build portfolios by 16
  • Communicate comfortably across text, video, and code
  • Know how to teach others from being in mixed-age or anonymous social environments

I for one am keenly interested in less time telling young people to shut up and sit down, and more time with them practicing the tasks AI can’t do well: empathy, synthesis, context, and collaboration.

It’s not school buildings or textbooks that make learners. It’s activating curiosity, experiencing mentorship, and access to tools that multiply your real results.
